Clarins is a French family-run business whose international activity began in the early 70's. Today, the Clarins Group is made up of 16 subsidiaries across 150 countries with more than 4000 employees and an annual turnover of 4 billion French francs.
The key ingredients of Clarins oils, creams and serums have been based on extracts from flowers, leaves, bark, roots and seeds. A pioneer of natural beauty, Clarins has included the highest quality plant extracts in their most effective concentration in each of its products.
Today, Christian and Olivier Courtin are helping to perpetuate the family business which their father Jacques started over forty years ago. Jacques Courtin invented a UVA filter to help protect from the rays' damaging potential deep within the skin. He later developed 'Eau Dynamisante', the first body fragrance to unite the fragrant and beauty benefits of plant extracts. He then patented his unique 'Anti-Pollution' Complex in 1990, a cocktail of concentrated plant extracts to help protect the skin from environmental aggressions which was later introduced in Hydration-Plus Moisture Lotion SPF 15, the first contemporary daytime moisturizer targeting city dwellers.
Courtin was aware that the exceptional properties of these plants had to be preserved, and their cultivation to respect their natural environment. He became concerned that the forests, rare plant species, as well as medicinal species and nature in general were being destroyed over time. He reacted by purchasing areas of land to help save part of the original Alpine environment, financing research efforts on Amazonian plants and even going as far as creating a village in the middle of Brazil.
Courtin's foresight and important investments coupled with motivated research teams has allowed Clarins to constantly innovate and actively participate in the evolution of cosmetics.
