After forty years on Sloane Street in four elegant Victorian townhouses, The General Trading Company has continued its tradition of eccentric homes - by moving into a former fire station and passementerie! Architect Spencer Fung has created an exceptional environment for GTC - it succeeds, in their customers' own words, in being 'contemporary yet timeless; spacious yet homely; grand yet welcoming.'
The shop, now at 2 Symons Street, next to Peter Jones, has been there for nearly two years. Customers still ask is they will move back to the old site which is currently under development as a retail and office space. GTC has moved home permanently and Pringle has now set-up into one half of the old GTC shop last April 2003.
As one leading interiors writer recently commented, GTC's great skill is creating harmonious, stylish and witty environments using a variety of disparate and unrelated objects. The selection of furniture and home accessories at GTC reflects the wide and eclectic tastes of the Shop's customers. Each piece is well-made, well-designed, timeless and, above all else, classic - a combination which allows GTC to create a confident mix of contemporary with antique, practical with frivolous, eastern with western.
The GTC Cafe also has received excellent comments from customers and reviewers. Designed by the shop's architect Spencer Fung the interior is stylishly fitted out using warm burnt orange leather on the banquettes, horsehair for the chair upholstery and smooth concrete floors. The Cafe is open from 10.00am until 6.00pm each day (6.30pm on Wednesdays) offering breakfast, lunch and tea. It is fully licensed for the consumption of wine, champagne and cocktails with or without food. Reservations can be made calling the Cafe direct on 020 7730 5271.
