Caroline Casey is a multi-talented, award winning designer of furniture and furnishing objects.
After a degree in fashion and textiles and four years as design director of her own company, Caroline turned to interior design and studying and working for a further four years in New York and London, where she worked for John Pawson. She returned to her native Sydney to focus her creative energies on an unique range of meticulously designed pieces of contemporary furniture. Most recently, Caroline's collection is being manufactured in Germany for European distribution and March 2003 saw the introduction of her designs to the UK.

Caroline joined us for a CoffeeBreak...
Your work has been collected by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Powerhouse Museum Sydney, the Art Gallery of South Australia and the National Gallery of Australia. What do you believe makes your designs so desirable?
Well, they are beautifully crafted and it is said that each has a poetic nature, design integrity and quality.
As an Australian based furniture designer, did you find it difficult building an international reputation?
Yes, it is difficult whether you are Australian or European but I think the Ternary of distance makes us more tenacious as we look for innovative ways to get work into the international market.
It has been said that you will spend a lot of time working on a design, meticulous with every detail - a wastepaper bin taking years to refine - is this true?
Ah yes, the Ned Bin, but this is an exception. There is attention to detail in every piece I design, but usually I can make refinements without too much difficulty and time, but there is one detail in the Bin that I still haven't been able to resolve...
Your designs have a wonderful h armony to them. What inspires your imagination?
Mostly natural forms and natural structures and work of traditional cultures crafts and techniques.
Do you have a particular design of yours that is a current favourite?
I have just completed a solid timber 4m table with no middle support. It has a very slight curve to the table. Each piece is made up with each individually curved and put together. I am very happy with the outcome.
What are you enjoying working on at the moment?
Bamboo Material. I am developing some exciting new technology with a company in China.
