Seven years ago Harriet Scott launched R K Alliston, and with her natural sense of style and detail it quickly caught the public's imagination.

Now, highly regarded for its unique style and unusual and carefully sourced products for the home and garden, R. K. Alliston has become a firm favourite with customers as far afield as Japan and the USA.

Harriet has been designing gardens for many years. Her eye for detail in landscapes, planting and design, from classical to contemporary, has resulted in many diverse projects and a prestigious client list.

Harriet joined us for a CoffeeBreak...

QR K Alliston has been called the Harvey Nicks of horticulture - how would you describe your style, taste and designs?

AI like simple understated style that incorporates natural texturesand colours. I think that design should have a lasting quality and notbe about the latest fashion. Personally my style is a mixture of antique and new design. I think atmosphere is very important and surround myself with objects, fabrics etc that make me comfortable and happy.

QWhere do you like to shop?

ABrighton for markets and unique shops, Jigsaw for clothes and Elizabeth King (delicatessen) for food.

QWho do you admire?

AMy grandfather is a big inspiration, both as a person and artist.

QHow do you keep your cool in your busiest moments?

AI usually go for a walk with my dog in the park.

QWith autumn coming what tips can you give to keep a garden looking good throughout the winter?

AIt is important to prune plants correctly in autumn and put the garden to bed properly so that it looks its best in the New Year. I like to add winter colour to containers and plant bulbs for early spring colour. A carefully thought out lighting scheme will also make the most of the garden as the nights draw in.

QWhat is the best thing about your garden?

AThe best thing about my garden is being in a calm environment; the fresh air, the greenness and the sound of birds.

QDo you have a favourite item in the shop at the moment?

AMy favourite item is the Chamomile and Mandarin bath soak from my new organic skincare range and also the leather handled mini secateurs.

QWhat is R K Alliston's best selling product to-date?

ABest selling product is the recycled tyre weeding bucket.

QDid you find time for a holiday this summer?

A No holiday over the summer as it is a busy time with gardens but I enjoyed a few weekends in Cornwall.

QWhat's on your shopping list?

AOn my shopping list are: long, buttoned cashmere gloves from Toast, an antique angle poise lamp and Liz Earle's Instant boost skin tonic.
