Tim joined us for a CoffeeBreak interview...
Ruscoe Swabey has a reputation for ideas that are ingenious and entertaining. What do you believe makes you one of the best in the business?
We really do care about even the tiniest detail or finish and maintain a real hands on approach from start to finish. I even have a photo of Jonathan touching up a stand in his best jeans! How's that for dedication?
How can you help others to present their brand in a stylish and memorable manner?
Our approach to a project is organic in that we do a detailed exploration of the client's brand and aspirations and develop the message layering before we put pen to paper on the physical design.
This means that each solution is unique, built elements reflect the spirit of the client's organisation and that the communications are clear and engaging.
You mentioned that you have recently completed a project working with the Tussauds Group for their attractions in London and Las Vegas. How did this involve you, and what were the results like?
With the best will in the world portrait figures are pretty static. In Las Vegas our brief was to bring a series of figure groups to life by creating a video montage of the life stories of these characters to work as a moving background. With large projections to three walls and a video installation to the fourth we were able to surround visitors with images from the lives of the characters blended into a continuous sequence of mini biographic vignettes.

In London we took a basic view down the river Thames and combined images of famous landmark buildings into a convincing fantasy panorama.
A twenty four hour cycle was condensed into ten minutes and included helicopters flying around, Tower Bridge rising, a firework display and of course the twinkling lights of the city at night.
Both projects have been successful in creating a dramatic context for the portrait figures adding significantly to the visitor experience.
Can you remember a job that is personally memorable to you and why?
Yes, the Nokia installation in Helsinki at their HQ. The Finnish people are the craziest bunch I have been fortunate enough to meet. What a refreshing change! They were open to all sorts of ideas. I don't know if it is the vodka or the six months of darkness, but they really know how to just go for it.
What would be your dream commission?
Big stuff. The Expo projects are always good. Big ideas, big techniques, huge audience throughput, usually decent budget and generally in exotic locations. Visitor attractions are also great to work on.
Getting back to the moment, what are you currently enjoying working on?
A couple of exhibition stands, a marketing CD Rom, strategic planning for a conference and some title graphics for a video, interiors for a retail outlet and a launch event for a TV channel. We are enjoying the variety and the juggling involved with a broad order book like this.
What do you like to read to keep informed about the business?
Anything from arty and architectural magazines through to Viz . Our business is so varied we pick up ideas from all over the place.
Based in London's Soho you have a great selection of restaurants and cafes to dine out in. Which is a regular of yours and why?
Bar Italia for pre work wake-up, Bertorelli for lunch or the chip shop up Berwick Street, Patisserie Valerie for afternoon cakes, Dog and Duck for drinks and networking, which despite the efforts of Madonna to make it too famous has remained a haven of good beer and convivial company.
Away from the frenzy of work, how do you like to relax and enjoy your free time.
Think of yourself sitting by the river cup of tea in hand and four hours later you catch a fish. One as long as your arm...
What type of book do you like to read, and have you read any good ones lately?
I am about to finish the biography of Ken Tyrell the formula 1 team leader, which has taken three months to get through. I like to take my time over these things. Jonathan on the other hand has been getting through a couple of books a week while he has been waiting to borrow it.
What's on your list of things to do?

To race a Ferrari 250 LM in the Le Mans Classic as soon as we have the million quid in the old petty cash tin!
