Mellor studied at Sheffield College of Art, the Royal College of Art and the British School at Rome. He won the award for Royal Designer for Industry, 1962; Hon. Doctor RCA, 2000; and in 2001 David Mellor was awarded the CBE for his services to design and manufacturing.
In 1954 David Mellor, Royal Designer for Industry, set up his first silversmithing workshop in Sheffield. He rapidly established himself as one of the leading metalworkers of his generation specialising in cutlery for which he has won numerous awards and an international reputation for its qualities of design and manufacture. 'Pride' (right) was designed when David Mellor was still a student at the Royal College of Art, London and was included in the very first Design Centre Awards in 1953. Pride has been in successful production ever since.
David Mellor operates on the simple principle that well-designed equipment can improve your life.
Known worldwide for his cutlery designs, David Mellor has also made lasting impressions on the landscape. Responsible for the first modern street furniture in Britain, Mellor's Bus Shelter in galvanised steel was used nationally from 1959.
Later in 1966 Mellor was commissioned by the Department of the Environment and as a result his design for the National Traffic Light System is still in use throughout the UK today.
In 1966 Mellor's design for the Square Pillar Box for the Post Office aroused public controversy as a departure from the traditional pillar box. The Embassy Teapot (right) was part of a large scale government commission in 1969, to Mellor, for handmade silver tableware for British embassies.
In the same year, and right at the other end of the scale is Mellor's 'made in the millions' design for Cross Paperware for disposable cutlery in white plastic .
'Minimal' (left) is David Mellor's most recent cutlery, superbly well made in luxury materials and arguably his most innovative.
You can see various pieces of David Mellor's work in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
